Specialising in using Gold

Specialising in using GOLD metallic threads means that many commissioned projects that I am asked to do, are of the more complex, rich historical and ceremonial designs.

I create a three dimensional aspect to the stitch, so there are plenty of highlights to enhance just the six thread colours used in this design, making it look as if there are far more.

All my embroidered creatures will have an eye for plenty of attitude, strong body forms and the smallest of details are recognisable even in stitch.

I will also try to emulate vintage hand embroidered wirework qualities in designs when it is appropriate to do so. The diversity and end use for the embroidery designs created, make every application and project different, perhaps as a unique one of a kind or for multiples as a production run.

All work and designs shown here, have been originated and digitised for stitch by Pauline Thomas, from her drawings, designs or artwork supplied by the client.

Bringing in an extra dimension

As an artist and designer, with a degree in Three Dimensional Design, I am able to bring this extra dimension to my embroidered textiles, enhancing the design.

Whether it is distance in a landscape or sculptural depth and form, in a face like that of Thamesis, one of two carved stone figureheads seen on the bridge arches over the river at Henley-on-Thames, home of the world famous regatta rowing Blazers.

I will take this considered and dimensional approach to all my embroidered designs and commissions, rather than just accepting all the black outlines and blocks of flat colour in a printed artwork.

As a traditional digitiser, I do not use automatic digitising techniques to scan vectored artwork, which okay, enables some really economical digitising rates and quick turnaround times. But often in production, these types of files, generate a lot of trims, excessive colour changes and higher stitch counts creating a lot of down time and increased production costs..

I actually prefer to work manually from a drawing, because the results are not only aesthetically more pleasing and creative , I can also have total control for colour sequences, stitch paths, underlays, stitch styles and pattern with minimal but effective colour changes, thread trims, which encourages lower final stitch counts without loss of detail or quality. Thereby creating rich designs with highlights, depths and a presence that is so much more, than just an enduring version of a print.

Beginning the process

A design needs to be digitised to create the actual machine embroidered stitches, stitch paths, initiate colour changes and automatic trims.

This will always need to start from the design artwork or a drawing.

In this example shown here, the client had no artwork available and had sent me a rather blurred photo of the clubs vintage embossed blazer button…….to work from. So using this, I created this working drawing.

Perhaps you have a project in mind that you would like me to help you with?

If so, please get in contact with me by opening the form, attaching any images, preferably as a JPEG file of any artwork or ideas with what you have in mind, with final sizes required, end use and time scales. This will be the start of a dialogue towards a quote and the finished project……

I have 30 years of experience in processing designs for embroidery stitch files. All projects are tested as an actual stitched sample.

As a guide, prices for origination’s of new designs and embroidery files through to first stitch samples start from £75 (Sept 2019) All prices are dependent on complexity, artwork quality design, finished sizes and quantities.

We can do small production runs here, I have no minimum order for production quantities required, but unit prices will reflect this on a scale.

We can also source clothing and accessories from well known brands that are suitable and designed for embroidery and continuity of supply.

The finished design as a DST formatted embroidery file, can be sent as an attachment and emailed to any professional embroiderer with software, with my recommended thread colour codes, to process for production should you wish*

*Original digital design embroidery files, associated drawings and all commissions however used, remain the physical and intellectual property of Pauline Thomas and Embroidered Collection.
